Inside the Arnot Health Pediatric Unit, the room is quiet, with the gentle hum of medical machines providing a soothing background. Nurses move carefully around the children in each room, tending to their every need.
Nurse Amanda approaches the nurses’ station. Her face is kind and calm, but there’s a sparkle of excitement in her eyes as she says to the group of nurses, “Something magical is about to happen.” She then whispers, “You know, there’s a little secret we’ve been keeping around here for the kids… today, Baby Bigfoot is coming to visit.”
A few feet away from the nurses’ station, the sound of the elevator arriving on their floor chimes. Nurse Amanda walks over to the elevator in anticipation of who could be inside. As the doors slide open, there he is—Baby Bigfoot. A tiny, fuzzy creature with big, wide eyes and the sweetest little face, almost comically cute. He is not the terrifying Bigfoot of legends, but a small, gentle creature with soft fur and a big heart.
Baby Bigfoot, or B.B. as he likes to be called, steps carefully off the elevator, his feet making gentle thuds on the hospital floor. A whimsical, magical energy surrounds him. Nurse Amanda bends down and whispers softly, “It’s time to bring some joy.” Baby Bigfoot nods eagerly, excited to bring smiles to the little ones and the staff.
As Nurse Amanda and B.B. begin walking the floor, B.B. notices a soft mist curling into the air from a nearby room. Curious, he peeks inside and finds a little girl tucked into bed, holding a mask to her face. It’s her breathing treatment for asthma. She looks a little nervous but brightens when she sees him. Reaching out to touch his paw, she giggles as B.B. playfully swipes at the mist, his paws batting at the air with curiosity.
In the next room, B.B. sees a little boy sitting up in bed. A nurse is carefully wrapping his arm in a bright cloth that hardens like a shield. The doctor holds up a black-and-white X-ray to a special light, and B.B. can see the boy’s bones! He sees the elbow and all of his fingers, then notices a crack on the lower part of the arm. The doctor explains that the cast will keep the bone still so it can heal properly. B.B. is amazed at how the bones fit together like puzzle pieces.
Once the nurse finishes, the boy grabs a deck of cards and starts shuffling with his good hand. He invites B.B. up to the bed and asks if he wants to play Slapjack. The boy explains that every time B.B. sees a Jack, he has to be the first to slap it! B.B. watches closely, and as soon as he spots a Jack, he slaps his paw down fast! Everyone cheers!
As the day goes on, so does Baby Bigfoot, visiting each room in the pediatric unit, leaving a trail of sparkles behind. The pediatric floor is now alive with soft giggles and murmurs of excitement as the children eagerly await their turn to meet Baby Bigfoot. Nurse Amanda watches in awe. She glances at the monitor of one particular child who had been struggling earlier. The numbers are steady, and her face glows with hope.
One of the other nurses on duty whispers to Nurse Amanda, “It’s working. It really is working.”
The hospital staff smiles quietly as they watch the magic unfold. Dr. Williams, the doctor on call, stands near a room door with his arms crossed, smiling in disbelief. He says to Nurse Amanda, “I’ve seen a lot in my time here… but this? This is something truly special.”
Smiling, Nurse Amanda replies, “That’s the magic of the Children’s Miracle Network. They make miracles happen.” And that’s truly what it was—a small miracle, having a happy little furry creature like B.B. come to visit for the day. It was a great day, a magical day at Arnot Hospital.
Now, the time has come for B.B. to return to his mom and dad in the woods. He tells the children that he plans to visit again soon and promises to bring Mama and Papa Bigfoot next time! The children are overjoyed at the thought of meeting B.B.’s parents, which helps soften the sadness of saying goodbye after such a wonderful day.
Nurse Amanda gently guides B.B. to the elevator as all the children cheer and wave goodbye. As they approach, the elevator dings, signaling its arrival. As the doors slide open, B.B. sees another nurse pushing a little girl in a wheelchair. The little one looks exhausted but smiles brightly at the sight of Baby Bigfoot! Knowing that she had missed his visit because of a scan, B.B. kneels down to say hi and shake her hand.
In a soft little voice, the girl says, “I’m so glad I got to see you before you had to go.” It’s clear that she thought she wouldn’t get to meet B.B. and is thrilled to shake his hand. She giggles, and Baby Bigfoot gives her a wink.
As B.B. heads for the exit, Nurse Amanda takes his arm, and they walk slowly down the hallway. B.B. is overjoyed at the sight of the hallway walls decorated with children’s artwork—handprints, colorful paintings, and pictures of former patients. As Nurse Amanda sends B.B. on his way, she says in a jovial voice, “Thank you, B.B. You’ve worked your magic.”
B.B. politely nods and walks outside, heading toward his home in the nearby woods, feeling fulfilled knowing he helped bring joy and smiles to children who needed it most. And that, truly, is a magical feeling.
