B.B. walks through the forest he knows so well, but things look different this morning. They smell different. They even sound different. B.B. looks up into the trees and sees their canopy of green leaves has turned vibrant shades of yellow, red, brown, and gold. The cool morning breeze makes a shuddering, rustling sound as the now dry leaves flit and dance around. B.B. starts to notice that some of the leaves, caught by the wind, slowly start to drift to the ground. It’s then he notices the carpet of crisp, fallen leaves covering the forest floor.
As B.B. shuffles his furry feet through the leaves, he can feel them crunch and crackle underneath. Suddenly, B.B. has an idea. In the middle of a small clearing, he gathers up pawfuls of dry leaves, dropping them into a small pile. Eventually, the small pile is almost as tall as he is! B.B. steps back and admires his work before leaping into the pile of leaves, rolling around and giggling to his heart’s delight as they tickle his fuzzy little nose.
Then, B.B. hears a sound coming from the edge of the forest; a chugging, rumbling noise mixed with the sound of more laughter! He creeps carefully toward the treeline, and sees a wide open field, with tall stalks of corn waving in the breeze. B.B. can hear laughter somewhere within the corn field. He plucks up his courage, and steps forward into the corn field, weaving between the stalks. Suddenly, B.B. sees a young human child, not much bigger than he is, run past him through the corn. He steps forward into an open space and sees several children following a path through the field.
One of the children notices B.B. and calls out, “Come! Follow us through the corn maze!” B.B. rushes to keep up with the children as they follow the path, twisting and turning through the stalks of corn. Eventually, they come to a set of wooden stairs, leading to a high tower overlooking the field. B.B. looks out over the path he has been following, and sees a shape. The path through the corn is in the shape of a big, furry foot!
As he looks at the field in amazement, B.B. starts to hear that chugging, rumbling noise he heard earlier from the edge of the forest. He looks down and sees a big green machine with big knobby wheels, rolling up to the base of the tower. Trailing behind is a big box on wheels, full of piles of dry, golden grass – and more people, too! “Hop aboard!” calls the man driving the big green machine. B.B. follows the children as they climb into the box full of soft, sweet-smelling, dry grass. The big green machine chugs along, and B.B. sees fields of big bumpy pumpkins, tall waving wheat, and rows and rows of trees filled with all kinds of delicious looking fruits. The children sitting with him say that this is called a “farm,” and is where people grow their food, instead of foraging in the forest. B.B. realizes he’s starting to get hungry!
The big green machine chugs to a stop next to a huge red wooden building, and B.B. can see and hear all sorts of animals; cows, horses, chickens, and pigs! He steps off and smells something wonderfully ripe and sweet. He looks and sees a mountain of apples next to a big wooden tub. B.B. watches fascinated as the man from the big green machine walks over to the tub and twists a big wooden handle. Suddenly, a stream of golden-brown juice starts flowing out of the tub. The man gathers some in a metal cup and hands it to B.B. “Here!” he says, “you won’t find apple cider fresher that that!” B.B. takes the cup and tastes the juice. It does taste just like sweet, ripe apples!
B.B. learns that the man is called a “farmer,” and that it is his job to gather all the food from the farm for other humans. The farmer shows B.B. the inside of the huge red building. He sees piles full of dried grass to feed the animals, and big bins full of ears of corn, fruit, and dried wheat. The farmer takes his hand and scoops up some of the wheat, letting it fall back into the bin. B.B. reaches in with his fuzzy hand and feels the wheat, too. It reminds him of the sand between his toes when he was at the beach!
The farmer tells B.B. that this time of year is called “harvest time,” when all the food is gathered before the cold Winter, and that soon there will be a big celebration that he says is called “Thanksgiving.” B.B. learns that on this day, human families and friends gather together to enjoy a great big meal, to enjoy each other’s company, and to be thankful for what they have. B.B. thinks to himself that this would be a wonderful idea to take back to his people – a Yeti Thanksgiving Day!
Just then, B.B.’s tummy starts rumbling, almost as loud as the big green machine! The farmer laughs and walks over to the pile of big ripe apples. He picks up a small sack, fills it with fruit, and hands it to B.B. “Here,” says the farmer, “this should help fill your fuzzy belly on your journey.” B.B. is so happy he hops on his furry feet and giggles, as he pulls out the juiciest apple from the sack, taking a big, crisp bite. B.B. shakes the farmer’s hand and notices that it feels almost as rough and tough as his Grandsquatch’s paw!
As B.B. walks down the dusty road leading away from the farm, his furry feet leaving a trail of prints behind him, he turns back and waves at the friendly farmer, who gives him a hearty wave back as he drives the big green machine, pulling another group of humans out to the big, foot-shaped maze in the corn. B.B. decides that right now, he is most thankful for getting to meet such helpful humans as he continues to discover his destiny out in the wide world.
